It’s the news all men have been waiting for: Sylvester Stallone is launching a fashion line.
“I thought the time is now,” Stallone told Men’s Week. “I’ve lived a life where I know what has worked and what hasn’t worked. Clothing is the first step to building a character.”
Some may argue that the time has actually long passed, but Stallone is a man defined by triumph over adversity, so if Sly says “wear this”, who are we to argue?
The inspiration for the collection, will be Stallone’s two most enduring characters: Rocky and Rambo, to address the duality that lurks within every man. “Rocky at the end of the day is a love story,” explains Michael Henry, president of Sly Inc. who will launch the line, “while Rambo showcases the other side of masculinity, he’s a loner.” So the label will offer looks for “the rebel and the gentleman.”
But expect more than tracksuits and combat gear. The range which Henry describes as “a little premium”, is set to incorporate a whole lifestyle from apparel, to eyewear, grooming products, fragrance and footwear, and will be targeted at mid-level department stores like Macy’s.
For anyone keen to know when Stallone’s ‘passion for fashion’ evolved, he explains that the first time he became “truly involved in style,” was between “Rambo 2” and “Rambo 3” when he underwent a “huge weight change,” dropping from 185 to 160 pounds. “Nothing fit so I started buying custom clothing. I found out I really like this world.”
But rather than rush into anything, the Hollywood actor, writer, director, painter and entrepreneur has spent years honing his craft, “I wasn’t ready and I didn’t know enough at that time,” he explained, “I know it’s 11 years later, but I’m more experienced. I really believe I have an understanding of the male psyche on all levels.”
